Avi Mayer is the Spokesman to the International Media for The Jewish Agency for Israel, the largest Jewish nonprofit organization in the world. He also maintains an extensive online presence and is frequently cited by journalists, government officials, advocacy organizations, and many others.
In 2013, Avi was named by The Algemeiner as one of the “Jewish 100”—the top one hundred people positively influencing Jewish life—along with U.S. President Barack Obama, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and other leading figures. In 2016, he was named the third most influential person on “Jewish Twitter” by JTA, just behind Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Avi has met with the President of the United States at the White House and with the Prime Minister of Israel at his official residence, and has testified before the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, on numerous occasions. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Maryland, he has worked for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of Israel in Washington D.C., Hillel International, and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Avi serves on the international boards of the American Jewish Committee’s ACCESS young leadership division and KAHAL, an organization for Jewish students studying abroad around the world.
Born in New York and raised in Jerusalem and Maryland, Avi served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) as a spokesman to the foreign press. He lives in Jerusalem, where he participated in the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies’ Jewish communal leadership program.
