Eric Beswick is currently Executive Director of the Cape Town Progressive Jewish Congregation aka Temple Israel (unique in that it is made up of three centres operating under one umbrella), a position he has held since February 2008. A lifelong Progressive Jew, he attended Shnat Netzer in 1992 and was a member of the leadership of Netzer South Africa until the end of 1995.
After graduating with a Marketing degree, Eric spent three years in London working and travelling before returning home to Cape Town. He worked in direct marketing and life insurance for a few years until accepting the Executive Director role. During that time, he was a council member of the synagogue, chairing the committee for three years.
With the rabbinic team and lay leadership of Temple Israel, Eric has overseen some great changes in the congregation, with the introduction of many successful services and events that have reactivated a once-powerful community.
Eric is eternally grateful for the role Netzer has played in his life and attempts to pay this back in his role as adult advisor to the movement, assisting mostly with fundraising to send kids to camp and Shnat every year. Eric is married to Mel (a relationship begun whilst involved with Netzer) and has two kids, Daniella (14) and Nathan (11). He is a keen sports fan and plays football (some people call it soccer) for his club’s veteran side.
